5 Reasons We See Fast Resolution to Sciatica
We look for & Correct the Cause
The majority of sciatica is driven by a faulty intervertebral disc such as a bulge or herniation, which can be a manifestation of poor biomechanics. The focus of Chiropractic is the mechanics of the spine. The Gonstead System of Chiropractic incorporates sound analysis principles. Examining for all the criteria defining a mechanical problem of the spine , is paramount to knowing exactly where correction is required. You have to be in the exact spot.
Precision adjustment not random Manipulation
Specific adjustment involves a carefully controlled force applied in the right spot to improve alignment of a vertebra or bone in its respective joint. The aim of restoring proper biomechanics is to facilitate healing of disrupted disc material which can be affecting sciatic nerve roots as they exit from the spine.
Special Focus on Sciatica
We have a strong focus on Sciatica in our practice. We believe our knowledge and understanding of sciatica combined with the application of Gonstead Chiropractic explains the incredible results we see in our practice.
Strategic Advice on Sciatica
We know exactly what to advise you on to protect the vulnerable region so as to maximise healing time without compromise. Advice is instructional on sitting, standing & sleeping position, what to avoid & what exercises to focus on after correction.
Knowing when to leave you alone
Healing is a massive part of your progress. Our job is to create the right environment so you can heal. We are not providing repetitive therapy. Our aim is to identify and correct the problem so you can heal yourself.
Two Most Common & Overlooked Problems We See in Practice Behind Majority of Sciatica
There are two succinct mechanical issues we find are responsible for the majority (85%) of disc problems and related sciatica we see in practice.
-
Rotated Sacrum -The first is the situation of the rotated sacrum or tailbone. The most common initial mechanism of injury is a lift & twist or a fall contacting the opposing side of the sacrum. This misalignment generates stress force to the disc above & torsion to its fibres, leading to weakening, cracking & bulge or herniation.
-
Posterior Sacrum -The second most common perpetrator is the posteriorly misaligned sacrum. The base directly beneath the lumbar disc is locked backward, leading to posterior disc stress and subsequent trouble. A direct fall to the sacrum is the most likely mechanism of injury.
The disc cannot heal properly in the presence of these issues.
More on Sciatica
Sciatica can be extremely debilitating and if you are on this page you or someone you care about is experiencing pain to a varying degree of intensity, travelling along the pathway of the Sciatic nerve. Pain can run from the lower back, traverse the pelvis into the gluteal musculature. From here, it can vary in its course either moving into the lateral thigh or migrating from the back of the thigh to the knee and in more severe cases it will make its way into the calf, outside of the lower leg to the feet & toes. The character of pain can also vary from a dull ache to sharp, shooting or lancinating pain. Paraesthesia or nerve pain may involve pins & needles, numbness and or tingling.
Diagnosis of Sciatica Is Crucial. A Chiropractor examines the patient and reviews medical history to determine what is causing the patient's sciatica pain. Chiropractic treatment is based on the principle that restricted spinal movement leads to pain and reduced function. Chiropractic care helps the body heal itself with non-invasive (non-surgical), drug-free treatment. Spinal adjustments (sometimes referred to as manipulations) free restricted movement of the spine and help to restore misaligned vertebral bodies to their proper position in the spine. Mastery of each adjustment technique is an art that requires great skill and precision.
Sciatica has a cause. To solve the problem, the environment has to be right for the nerve to heal. In most case the nerve has been compromised by one of the lower lumbar intervertebral discs. To resolve this issue without surgery, the cause for the demise of the disc needs to be corrected. Non-chiropractic therapies are aimed at secondary phenomena such as inflammation, tight muscles and diseased intervertebral discs, and may only offer transient relief. Such therapies you may have tried include traction devices, prescribed exercises, medication, epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks, radio frequency denervation (deadening the nerve) and surgery.
Cause focused correction is vastly different to therapy, and careful and detailed analysis determines where the exact mechanical problem is and works to bring this back to a natural state again. This will ultimately create the right environment and circumstance for the damaged structures to mend and for healing to occur.
We are experts in correcting the problem driving majority of Sciatic pain and pride ourselves on fast, incredible results, through the care we provide. If the problem is not one for us, our detailed and thorough exam will identify this and referral to another provider will be made.
Sciatica affects the sciatic nerve, a large nerve extending from the lower back down the back of each leg. Sciatica usually affects only one side of the lower body. Often times, pain travels from the lower back all the way through the back of the thigh and down through the leg. The pain may also reach the foot or toes. For some people, the pain can be severe. For others, the pain might be infrequent and irritating, but it can get worse. Sciatica is caused by irritation of the root(s) of the lower lumbar and lumbosacral spine.
Symptoms of Sciatica
-
Pain in the leg or gluteal region and may be worse when sitting
-
Burning or tingling running down the leg
-
Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg or foot
-
A constant pain on one or both sides of the buttock
-
A shooting pain into the leg
-
Difficulty standing and or walking
Common Causes of Sciatica
-
Spinal stenosis, narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back.
-
Degenerative disc disease affecting the discs that cushion the vertebrae.
-
Spondylolisthesis, when one vertebra slips forward over another one.
-
Pregnancy, which can add a severe strain on the spine.
Additional Factors
Excess weight, not exercising on a regular basis, high heels, or sleeping on a mattress that is too soft.
Sciatic nerve compression may result in the loss of feeling, paralysis of a single limb or group of muscles, and insomnia.
